There is a $0.15 per mile charge for every mile over the number of free miles. Cars are rented with 10 gallons of gas in the tank and must be returned with the same amount. If the car is returned with less than 10 gallons the charge is $1.50 per gallon.

I am making a trip with friends to california. We wanted to get a rental car one way, then fly home. A friend at work told me that years ago he got in touch with a car transport company, that actually "hired" him i guess you could call it,

Yep, but I don't know anyone who's actually done it. Rental car companies have cars going 1-way all the time (plus U-Haul types).

I've even heard of placing ads on your car & getting paid for it.

but when you arrive at your vacation destination, the rental car company is out of the type of car you reserved. However, the rental car company compensates you by giving whatever they have left in stock for free plus free gas, free insurance coverage
