The travel system/car seat is almost 1 year old. I have heard its not safe to use another person's carseat and to buy a new one. Is this true?

Its actually unsafe to get a used car seat unless it is coming from a trusted friend or relative and you are 100% positive:
1)it has never been in any wreck
2)it has all the original pieces, including manual
3)it has never been dropped,

Ive narrowed my 2 choices down to either the chicco keyfit 30 cortina travel system or the Britax chaperone with the soon-to-be-available matching stroller. Does anyone have any saftey links for these (car seat) or a head to head comparison? Any thoughts
