In geology terms, why would outcrop width be different on each side of the axial plane?

A: The width of outcrop would be different if one side of the fold dipped more sharply than the other side. The greater the angle, thinner (and closer to the true width of bed) seems the outcrop.

Axial refers to force along the length of the steel beam.
Flexural refers to force at right angles to the length of the beam.
